Bayern Munich prodigy Mathys Tel reveals his best position – Bavarian Football Works

Filed under:
Striker? Winger? Why have one if you can have both?
Bayern Munich player Mathys Tel spoke in an interview with Bundesliga’s english channel about the position on the field he is best suited to play. The answer is likely not surprising to Bayern fans.
“I’m somewhere between a number nine and a left winger. I can also play on the right, but I’m more comfortable as a striker and on the left.”
That has consistently proven to be the case during his time at Bayern and where he has been deployed under both former coach Julian Nagelsmann and the current one, Thomas Tuchel. Though, of course, his answer might have ranged from center-back to midfielder if he had been asked this question just five years ago. Regardless, it is good to see the youngster having figured out his best positions of left winger/striker. But why is it more difficult for him on the right?
“Not difficult, but I would say I’m more comfortable on the left compared to the right. I’m right footed, so it’s harder for me to cut inside from the right.”
Yeah, that makes sense. Then again, thinking back to last season’s 6-1 win over Werder Bremen and the goal he scored in that game, perhaps even playing off the right cannot slow him down.
