What are we supposed to do with our weekend now?
Big news coming out of Germany — according to Bild reporter Tobias Altschäffl (and now confirmed by the DFL), Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin has been canceled due to inclement weather. Heavy snow in Bavaria and especially around Munich have led to flight cancelations and cessation of trains into and out of the city. Even if the field could have (somehow) been cleared for the game to go ahead, most fans would have had to miss the event due to a lack of transport to and from the stadium.
The club confirmed the decision via Twitter:
⚠️ Today’s Bundesliga home match against @fcunion_en has been postponed due to extreme snowfall in Munich.

Bayern’s Bundesliga game against Union Berlin, originally scheduled for 15:30 CET today at the Allianz Arena, has been postponed due to heavy snow overnight. The snowfall is also not forecast to end until Saturday evening. Even if it had been possible to get the pitch at the Allianz Arena in a condition that would have allowed the match to go ahead by the afternoon, safety risks and the traffic situation made cancellation unavoidable.
Snow falling from the roof at the Allianz Arena poses an incalculable risk for spectators. In addition, it is almost impossible to get to the stadium. Countless buses and trains are cancelled, many roads and motorways are completely closed, the underground line U6, which runs to Fröttmaning and the Allianz Arena, has been suspended. The Munich police recommend that people do not leave their homes. Under these conditions, it cannot be guaranteed that the necessary security personnel will be able to reach the Allianz Arena.
FC Bayern will provide information on the rescheduling of the match as soon as a new date has been agreed with the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL). Tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled match.
CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen: “We very much regret that we have to postpone the match, but the safety of our fans and the supporters of Union Berlin has absolute priority. In addition, access to the Allianz Arena is not guaranteed due to numerous road closures and various public transport cancellations. We will inform you about a possible new date as soon as possible.”
With the game having to be rescheduled, it will only add fixture congestion to whatever week it inevitably falls on. In some ways, it gives Union Berlin a reprieve — they don’t have to face Bayern right after hiring a new coach. Meanwhile, for Thomas Tuchel, this is an opportunity to give his squad a mini-holiday, given that the Bavarians are already out of the Pokal and don’t have any midweek games coming up next week.
International fans will naturally be disappointed, especially those who look forward to a Bayern game as a highlight of their week. However, the pics from Munich clearly show why the game couldn’t go ahead — that’s just way too much snow.
Not surprised that Bayern vs Union Berlin isn’t happening today. It’s utter snow madness in Munich today. No flights at the moment, trains aren’t running. Even the newspaper guys didn’t show up. pic.twitter.com/X8RpWE0Vpl
Honestly, as someone who’s been watching Bayern Munich for over a decade now, this feels like the first time an official Bundesliga game has had to be canceled due to the weather. Guess there’s a first time for everything.
