That is one way to handle adversity…
A sign of where a team is within its season is how it handles adversity.
After getting blown out 5-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich’s players gave a clear indication of the squad’s mentality by fleeing the scene of the crime without speaking to the media.
The only player who met the obligation was Thomas Müller, a seldom-used, afterthought in Thomas Tuchel’s attack. Sport1 journalist Kerry Hau captured the scene and also provided a quote from Tuchel, who tried to cover up for the squad:
Bis auf Thomas Müller, der die TV-Interviews machen musste, stiegen nach #SGEFCB alle Spieler des FC Bayern in den Bus. Wie schon nach dem Saarbrücken-Spiel stellte sich niemand den Fragen in der Mixed Zone. Thomas Tuchel bittet bei der PK um Verständnis und betont: „Deutlich…
Except for Thomas Müller, who had to do the TV interviews, all FC Bayern players got on the bus after #SGEFCB . As was the case after the Saarbrücken game, no one asked questions in the mixed zone. Thomas Tuchel asks the PK for understanding and emphasizes: “The answers we give on the pitch are much more important, not the ones in interviews…”
When a team refuses to talk, it usually comes down to very immature behavior, extreme frustration, or both.
Sometimes, players do not talk to the press because they do not feel like they can control what they will say — fearing something detrimental could come out.
However, only having one player speak on behalf of an entire team is very telling. Moreover, the coach trying to justify it — and with a lame excuse — made the situation even worse.
Bayern Munich needs to be better.
