One of the most successful IPL franchises, Mumbai Indians sent shockwaves through the cricketing world when they announced Hardik Pandya as the captain for the upcoming IPL 2024 season, replacing Rohit Sharma. The news stirred a strong emotional response from Rohit’s passionate fanbase, with some expressing their disappointment, anger, and feeling gutted.
The anticipation of change loomed large when Mumbai Indians pulled off a historic coup by trading Hardik Pandya back from the Gujarat Titans, just a day after the retention window closed. The official announcement of the leadership shift came four days before the auction, setting social media abuzz with reactions.
A segment of Rohit’s fans didn’t take the decision lightly, and videos depicting the burning of Mumbai Indians jerseys and caps quickly went viral.

Mumbai Indians addressed the change, emphasizing that it was a strategic move aligning with their future plans. They expressed gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exemplary service to the franchise since 2013, during which the team secured five IPL titles.
“It’s about building a legacy and sticking to Mumbai Indians’ philosophy of preparing for the future.”
“Mumbai Indians have consistently had great leaders, from Sachin to Harbhajan, and Ricky to Rohit. They not only focus on immediate success but also prioritize strengthening the team for the future.”
“Following this philosophy, Hardik Pandya will take on the captaincy for Mumbai Indians in the upcoming IPL 2024 season,” Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance for Mumbai Indians, said.
“We warmly embrace Hardik Pandya as the new captain of MI and extend our best wishes to him,” he added.
Welcoming Hardik Pandya as the new captain, Jayawardene acknowledged his significant role in Mumbai Indians’ success between 2015 and 2021. Hardik had left the franchise to captain the Gujarat Titans, leading them to the IPL title in 2022 and a runners-up finish in the most recent season.
