166 Bundesliga assists and counting — Bayern Munich celebrates Thomas Müller – Bavarian Football Works

Filed under:
Raumdeuter season, and more.
Thomas Müller is never going out of fashion. The Bundesliga’s assist king added two more on Wednesday at Wolfsburg, bringing the Bayern Munich star’s season total to six and adding to his reign at the top. Per FCBayern.com’s tally, the Raumdeuter has 166 league assists to his name.
The club website also captured sporting director Christoph Freund’s celebratory mood after the Bavarians’ victory.
“Thomas played a great game, he was a decisive factor in our winning,” Freund enthused.
Müller formed a forward partnership with Bayern’s new striker this season, Harry Kane. The connection between Robert Lewandowski’s long-time delivery man and the English sharpshooter has been long awaited. But rather than combining centrally, it was Müller drifting out wide to hold the flank on this occasion, with both assists coming from a position where a winger or forward would normally think to take his man on and get closer to goal.
Instead, Müller sought to create and picked out Jamal Musiala, then Harry Kane, who obliged him with two wonderful finishes to carry Bayern to three points.
Müller nearly got in with a goal himself, too. With the score at 0-0, he found himself in poacher’s position to receive a threatening ball from Leroy Sané. It would have been a typical Thomas Müller finish, glancing off his knee and catching everyone unawares — but somehow, this time the luck of the bounce did not find the back of the net. Müller recovered to provide an excellent layoff and chance to Raphaël Guerreiro, but the midfielder could not supply the finishing touch.
No matter: Müller found his assists in the end, and Bayern the win. The 34-year-old veteran looks as pivotal to Bavarian fortunes as he has ever been…and for Freund, the close of the Hinrunde has offered a pleasing glimpse at the future, too. Namely, youngster Aleksandar Pavlović, the 19-year-old pressed to service in the wake of absences of Bayern’s regular engine room maestros, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka.
“I’m happy for Aleks Pavlović, who used the two games to show that he’s ready to play at this level,” Freund added.
No surprise: the veteran Müller has taken the youngster under his wing. A Bayern legend through and through, Müller is leaving a lasting impression and legacy that will go beyond his own playing days.
