UEFA Youth League draw pits Bayern Munich against FC Basel – Bavarian Football Works

If Bayern wants to progress to the Round of 16 for the first time in four years, the team will need to be at its’ best
While the Champions League draw for the Round of 16 happened on Monday and ended with Bayern Munich’s senior team getting matched against Lazio, the U-19 version of the Champions League, the UEFA Youth League, had its’ draw for the play off round ahead of the Round of 16 today, Tuesday. Why is there a playoff? The format of the UEFA Youth League is a little different than the Champions League. The group stages are exactly the same. But the winners of their respective groups automatically qualify for the Round of 16, while second placed teams need to play a single match elimination match in order to qualify for the Round of 16.
As Bayern could only finish second behind Copenhagen, Bayern’s U-19 side is forced into the play off. Bayern’s opponent will be Swiss side FC Basel, who usually boast strong youth development and will likely be a formidable challenge for coach Michael Hartmann’s side. The game will take place on either the 6th or 7th of February, shortly after which the draw for the Round of 16 will happen.
The sporting director of the FC Bayern Campus, Halil Altintop, had this to say: “This is an interesting opponent for us. Switzerland have been doing outstanding work in youth development for many years. FC Basel is also known for such quality. We are excited about this interesting matchup and grateful that the travel won’t be especially difficult.”
Other German teams in the play off round include Mainz against Barcelona, which is surely going to be a real firecracker of a match between two extremely strong youth teams, and Dortmund against MŠK Žilina, which looks like a straightforward match for Dortmund on paper.
