Daily Schmankerl: Chelsea to enter sweepstakes for Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies?; Quartet of Bayern Mun… – Bavarian Football Works

When we say the big fellas in red today, we are not reminiscing about Niklas Süle.
Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies is in the midst of a back-and-forth with the club over a contract extension.
Knowing that, some clubs are salivating at the chance to potentially pick up the Canadian star. Real Madrid and Manchester City have been the most prominent clubs mentioned, but Chelsea FC could be lurking on the outskirts of a pursuit. If Gary Lineker has anything to say about it, Davies will be headed to London during the summer:
Gary Lineker raved about the special talent of Bayern’s Davies after seeing him on Sunday.
“I watched the Bayern Munich game last night and Alphonso Davies was a bit sharp. Cor blimey he was good,” Lineker told The Rest Is Football. “For those of you who don’t know him, he was a young player, was actually a refugee had to flee and ended up in Canada and broke through there and then was signed by Bayern Munich. He’s such a good player, incredibly quick, so good. Such a good full-back. We like him.”
Journalist Simon Phillips reported via Substack last month that Chelsea are keeping their eye on Bayern’s Davies as a potential target for next summer. Meanwhile, Sport Bild recently reported that Spanish giants Real Madrid are interested in Davies as well and could be prepared to pay up to €50million (£43million) for him.
For Chelsea, the left-back position is one that you could argue needs strengthening in 2024. Ben Chilwell is the outstanding left-back at Stamford Bridge, but he’s had numerous injury interruptions in the last couple of years. Meanwhile, Marc Cucurella still has plenty of doubters after a very challenging first year last season.
Davies has been up-and-down this season, but is still loaded with potential. Agreeing on a salary with Bayern Munich, however, has proven difficult. If the two sides cannot come to an accord, maybe Chelsea will get its chance to make a play for Davies.

Bayern Munich closed out the first half of the season (effectively, not officially) with a 2-1 win on the road over Wolfsburg that displayed the best and worst of what the Bavarians have showed throughout the Hinrunde.
With some downtime in the schedule, now is the moment to reflect on where the team is, how it has played, and where things might be going….so let’s get to it:

When Manchester United inked Casemiro, it might have inadvertently cost the Red Devils a chance to sign Harry Kane away from Tottenham Hotspur. Instead, Kane landed in Germany with Bayern Munich:
Casemiro’s move to Manchester United was reportedly the reason why Erik ten Hag was unable to sign Harry Kane over the summer.
Casemiro joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid for £60 million in August 2022 and quickly established himself as one of Erik ten Hag’s most important players, making 51 appearances in all competitions.
However, the Brazilian has experienced a drop-off in performances this season and hasn’t featured since November 1 after picking up a hamstring injury.
As a result, he has been rumoured with a January exit, with Everton midfielder Amadou Onana tipped to replace him at Old Trafford. But Casemiro was also reportedly the reason United failed to sign Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.
That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that the Casemiro deal “ended United’s hopes of a move for Harry Kane this summer because the England striker’s wages would have been too great to work into FFP regulations”.
The report adds that Ten Hag opted to sign Casemiro because he needed an “immediate impact” and the club unanimously agreed with the decision.
However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is thought to have questioned the signing during his tour of Carrington in March, as the British billionaire prepares to take full control of the club’s sporting matters after his 25 per cent investment was accepted by the Glazers in November.

RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško is caught up in the mix of attackers at the club and is rumored to be open to a transfer. Manchester United, Arsenal FC, Chelsea, and Newcastle United are all interested in the Slovenian:
Benjamin Sesko, a long-term target for Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United, is open to a Premier League move in January, 90min understands.
The 20-year-old joined RB Leipzig from sister club Salzburg last summer, but has played second fiddle to the outstanding Lois Openda during the first few months of the 2023/24 season. Sesko has started just three Bundesliga matches from a possible 16, with the majority of his appearances coming in short cameos from the substitutes’ bench, and got the nod in just two of Leipzig’s six Champions League group games.
90min has reported extensively on the interest from Premier League sides in Sesko, most notably from United, Arsenal and Chelsea, while Newcastle have also kept a close eye on the Slovenian’s development.
Intermediaries had previously made it known that Sesko could be available to move in January, with more playing time firmly on the agenda as he prepares to lead the Slovenia line at Euro 2024. 90min understands that nothing has changed in that regard, and all interested Premier League clubs have again been informed of the potential of agreeing a deal. A loan with an obligation to buy, should certain criteria be met, has been suggested, and Sesko’s game is one many top scouts feel is suited to top-level English football.
