Could Bayern be trying to sign a defender from one of their direct Bundesliga rivals?
The significance of the January transfer window cannot be understated for Bayern Munich. Thomas Tuchel is in need of bringing in defensive reinforcements and he is still keen on signing a defensive midfielder, though the ladder is taking a back seat in order of what is most important right now.
Bayern’s need for defenders is compounded by the fact that both Noussair Mazraoui and Kim Min-jae will be away on international duty with Morocco and South Korea for AFCON and the Asian Federations Cup, respectively. Depending on what signings Tuchel does or does not make in the January window, he could be going into a handful of Bayern’s matches to kickoff the Rückrunde with thin defensive depth.
There have been a handful of defensive names linked with a potential January move to the Rekordmeister, but in the latest twist of the transfer rumor mill, Bayern could be looking to one of their direct Bundesliga rivals to poach some talent.
Per football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on his “Here We Go” podcast (as per @iMiaSanMia), Bayern is one of a handful of clubs interested in trying to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong. Arsenal was one of the other clubs specifically mentioned as far as showing interest in the 23-year-old Dutch defender.
Unfortunately for Bayern’s sake, this move is more likely to happen this summer if something does even wind up materializing. It is far too unrealistic to expect this to happen during the winter transfer window.
Per Romano, Frimpong is open to a new experience via a new club and there is a good chance he will wind up leaving Die Werkself during the summer transfer window. In his current contract with Leverkusen, he has a €40m release clause valid in the summer. his current contract with Xabi Alonso’s side is set to run through June 2028 after he signed an extension back in the fall and his stock is only rising with how well Leverkusen have been performing this season, topping Bayern in the Bundesliga standings going into the holiday break.
