Bayern Munich wants mentally strong players.
One of the primary objectives for Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund when he was hired was to revamp the club’s youth system.
Most importantly, Bayern Munich wants to improve its scouting and player identification. Freund said that a player’s mentality is of the utmost importance in terms of the types of players that the club wants to train and develop.
“It is absolutely crucial in our assessment of players. We collect a lot of impressions from the players outside the football pitch. How does he deal with fellow players, how does he behave in certain situations – we talk about that with many of his companions. You have to be made to give everything to get to the top and stay at the top. There are plenty of examples of players who were hugely talented but still took a different path,” Freund told Bayern Munich club magazine Säbener51 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “There have to be different types of players in a team, and everyone has individual strengths in management. The more different the types of players, the broader the range of services that can be represented. The important thing is that you always find common ground between them.”
While he will be busy with the January transfer window in the coming weeks, Freund will undoubtedly look to help bolster the youth system’s ranks with talent during the second half of the season.
Maybe…just maybe…a mentality monster or two will be welcomed into the mix.
