It was fun (and successful) at Bayern Munich while it lasted.
In an interview with Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch, Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer told fans not to expect a return showing for the famed transfer task force from last summer.
“We had a special situation in the summer because we had to replace Hasan Salihamidžić and Oliver Kahn. We asked ourselves: how can we gather a lot of football expertise as quickly as possible for the summer? Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge were extremely important,” Hainer said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We got exactly the players we wanted. But I don’t expect the transfer task force to be a model for the future. Nevertheless, the advice of Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge will always be important to us — anything else would be negligent. Both have excellent contacts in the entire business and are also members of the supervisory board.”
One person on that aforementioned task force, who has been silent of late is technical director Marco Neppe. Per Hainer, Neppe is still a key part of the Bayern Munich machine, even if he was hired under the last regime.
“(Neppe) did very well in the summer transfer window with his network and organized important information for us about the (transfer) candidates. I’m hearing that he’s also working well with Christoph Freund,” Hainer said,
The president did stop short of making any guarantees about what the future might hold for Neppe.
“He did very well in the summer. In general, this is a matter for the executive board,” Hainer said.
As for Freund, Hainer said he has done excellent work thus far.
“Normally everyone gets 100 days before the first conclusion. But we can already say that he’s doing his thing very well. He has an enormous football knowledge and worked at RB Salzburg for 17 years, that speaks for his quality and shows that he stands for continuity. He discovered players like Erling Haaland, Naby Keita and Dayot Upamecano,” Hainer said. “That’s exactly what we expect from him here too, we need a man like that. We invested a lot of money on the Campus in the past and we expect even more return. Players like Jamal Musiala, Josip Stanišić, Frans Krätzig and Aleks Pavlović are the beginning. That’s how it should continue. Freund will help us with that.”
