There are a lot of benefits to some warm weather training in Tuchel’s eyes.
The second half of the Bundesliga season is officially underway and Bayern Munich is just a few days away from heading out on their mini training camp trip to Portugal. They are set to go there from the 14th to the 18th of the month for some warmer weather training.
The trip comes in between the TSG Hoffenheim match and the matchup against SV Werder Bremen on the 21st, which is quickly followed three days later by the rescheduled encounter against Union Berlin. The original fixture was cancelled last year due to record-setting snowfall in Munich that deemed it too unsafe for travel purposes as well as some safety concerns at the Allianz Arena.
In the press conference ahead of the match against Hoffenheim, manager Thomas Tuchel was asked about the brief trip to Portugal and he explained some of the reasons why he finds such a trip highly beneficial for the squad. Of course, it was difficult to try to find the right time to schedule the excursion, but it is still something Tuchel found necessary to do.
“I just like training camps with a warmer temperature. You can simply spend more time together. And we don’t have the extreme cold, so we can organize our breaks differently. In the cold, the risk of illness and injury is higher. The conditions should be perfect to be able to train twice a day. We can then further practice attacking and defensive processes, set pieces and much more. I’m looking forward to that time. I hope we’ll go to Portugal with a win,” Tuchel explained when he was asked about the getaway (via @iMiaSanMia).
Not for nothing, either, but the trip to Portugal would certainly be an improvement in the eyes of a majority of the supporters, as Bayern’s previous winter training camps have been in Qatar. The business relationships the club has held with the country has been a subject of heated debate and scrutiny amongst Bayern supporters, so much so that tempers have boiled over in previous general assemblies, but that is now a thing of the past.
