Royal Enfield Himalayan recalled; over 4500 units affected – BikeWale

Update (10 March, 2023): Update: Royal Enfield has issued a statement around this recall. As per the official statement, Royal Enfield has undertaken a similar measure in the US as part of the precautionary service intervention and currently, the motorcycles sold during the period March 2017 and February 2021 will undergo replacement of the brake calipers free of cost. The statement further added that the precautionary service intervention for brake caliper replacement in markets across Europe, the UK, and Korea is underway. This is pertinent to only countries where roads are treated with specific salts to melt the ice during winter. Lastly, the company said that this recall is not applicable to motorcycles sold in India.
Royal Enfield has issued a recall for the Himalayan adventure-tourer in the USA. The recall affects 4,800 units manufactured between 1 March 2017 and 28 February 2021.
The reason for the recall is concerned with the calipers which are susceptible to corrosion when exposed to large quantities of salt that is used in international markets to clear the roads during winter. This could lead to reduced braking performance or complete loss of braking too, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 
The manufacturer has informed owners to pay attention to brake dragging and increased brake noise. Even unusual or burning smell near the caliper could be a sign of wear. And In an analysis with Brembo and Bosch, Royal Enfield has concluded that replacing the calipers with anodized units would address the issue. And the company will replace the front and rear brake calipers free of charge on all affected Himalayans. 
That said, Royal Enfield hasn’t issued any such recall for the Himalayan in India since there is little to no exposure to clearing salts given our weather conditions. However, we recommend getting your motorcycle checked at the nearest service center if it is showing signs of brake wear, dragging or any unusual noise.
