‘His body cannot cope with Test cricket’: Ravi Shastri on Hardik Pandya – The Indian Express

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has made it clear that Hardik Pandya might not play the Test cricket ever as his body can’t cope with the longer format.
“His body cannot cope with Test cricket. Let’s be very clear about that,” Shastri told The Week.
However, Shastri feels that if Hardik Pandya remains fit he should take over the white-ball captaincy after the ODI World Cup.
“After the World Cup, if his body is fit enough, he should take over captaincy in white-ball cricket,” said Shastri.
Shastri has also said that time is ripe in Indian cricket to phase out senior players.
“There are seniors ready to be phased out and there are youngsters ready,” he said.
“No question about it when it comes to T20 cricket. Lesser in 50-over cricket and even fewer in Tests,” he added.
Shastri has given a stern warning to the youngsters, who feels that being a good white-ball cricketer doesn’t guarantee you a place in red-ball team.
“Because of the IPL, you see an abundance of high-quality, young, white-ball players. But, one should not get carried away by that and think they should be automatic red-ball choices,” he said.
“No, I would rather see the red-ball record. I would sit with the selectors and find out more about who the [red-ball performances] were against, in what conditions, what are their strengths, what is the temperament of the bloke like,” he added.
