Shubman Gill was the name on everyone’s lips as Gujarat Titans skipper and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma both lauded the opening batter’s 60-ball 129 in the Indian Premier League Qualifier 2 on Friday.
“I think the clarity and confidence he is carrying is amazing. Today’s innings was one of the finest, he never looked rushed. It felt like someone was throwing balls and he was hitting. He will be a superstar in international and franchise cricket,” Hardik said after the match.
“Shubman batted really well. Got to give credit to him. He is in great form and I hope he continues that, “Rohit added post-match.
The Mumbai skipper also rued the lack of partnerships while chasing Gujarat’s massive total but added that batting has been one of the positives for his franchise this season.
“With the batting we had we were quite positive when we went in. Couldn’t stitch enough partnerships. Green and Surya batted well but we lost our way. We spoke about giving it a good crack, we lost a couple of wickets in the powerplay and did not get the momentum when chasing a target like that,” he said.
“Playing this game and qualifying as 3rd gives us a lot of confidence, our batting has been the biggest positive, some of the younger players especially and take it to next season and see what you can do. All the bowling teams have been challenged this season, looking at what happened in the previous game, we had a great performance,” he added.
Talking about Ishan Kishan’s freak eye injury, Rohit said he wasn’t sure what happened. Ishan and Chris Jordan were walking past each other between overs when the two collided, with the Barbadian-born English cricketer not seeing the Indian keeper since he was wiping his face with a towel. Jordan’s left elbow hit Ishan flush in the left eye region. The keeper immediately walked off to the dressing room and did not come back out to bat.
“We did not expect that, he had a bit of a concussion, I don’t know how it happened,” Rohit said.
Hardik, meanwhile, lauded spinner Rashid Khan and said he was pretty excited to play the final against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.
“I think we’ve spoken enough about him. He’s been the man I can rely on when the team is in a tough situation. We have to play good cricket, put in our 100%. Knockouts could go either way, but very excited for the final,” Hardik said.

For GT, Mohit Sharma (5/10) was the pick of the bowlers, while Rashid Khan (2/33) also did his bit with the ball.
