Who will captain Mumbai Indians if Hardik Pandya returns to MI in IPL 2024? Will Rohit Sharma remain in charge? – Sporting News

The trade window, as well as the deadline for finalising the lists of released and retained players is Sunday, 26 November with the mini-auction ahead of IPL 2024 set to be held on 19 December in Dubai.
One of the big trade deals rumoured to be taking place is that of Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians. The India all-rounder started his career with the franchise in 2015, before moving to Gujarat Titans in 2022, captaining the side to two finals and one title.
But if Hardik were to make the move back to Mumbai, who could captain the franchise?
Mumbai Indians are currently led by India captain Rohit Sharma, who has led the side since 2013, when he took over from Ricky Ponting. With such a successful tenure under his belt, replacing Rohit will be difficult but given his age, MI will likely have started thinking about how to go about it.
Many rumours have speculated that MI have attempted to bring Hardik back in to take over as the long-term skipper of the franchise. If that is the case, Rohit may play a couple of seasons under him to smooth over the transition, just as Sachin Tendulkar played under Rohit in 2013. There have also been talks of Rohit moving the other way, to GT in which case Hardik could take over straightaway too.

Of course, another option would be for Rohit to remain as captain even if Hardik were to return. Even if the long-term plan for MI is to appoint Hardik as Rohit’s successor, he could play under Rohit for a season or two before taking over. However, it seems unlikely that Hardik will settle for anything less than captaincy since he’s already a captain with GT.
Star batter Suryakumar Yadav has served as Rohit’s deputy in the past and captained one match in the 2023 season in his absence. ‘SKY’ was also named as India’s captain for the ongoing T20 series against Australia. He might have captaincy ambitions once Rohit steps down and Hardik’s potential return might be an obstacle for him.
Jasprit Bumrah was another captaincy candidate, as one of the seniors in the MI camp. He has also led India, in a T20 series in Ireland earlier this year. He might also fall down in the pecking order if Hardik does return to MI.
