Hardik Pandya is set to leave Gujarat Titans and return to five-time champions Mumbai Indians, where he made his IPL debut in 2015. According to ESPNcricinfo, it will be an all-cash deal, with the Mumbai-based franchise paying INR 15 crore to GT to get all-rounder on board for IPL 2024.
It will be the biggest player trade in league history. MI and GT are tight-lipped about the development. The challenge for Mumbai is to have enough money in the bank to complete the trade. They will have to release a couple of players to bring Hardik back to the camp. The deadline for the retention of the players ends on November 26 at 4pm IST.
Hardik led Titans to maiden IPL title in 2022, their debut season in the competition. In 2023, the Titans made it to the final for the second year in a row, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings. In both seasons, Gujarat Titans had finished top of the points table.
In 30 innings for GT, Hardik amassed 833 runs at an average of 41.65 and strike rate of 133.39. He took 11 wickets at an economy of 8.1.
Hardik is currently recovering from an ankle injury. He was injured during one of the World Cup games against Bangladesh and was ruled out of the remaining matches.
If everything goes as planned, Hardik will be the third captain to be traded after R Ashwin moved from Punjab Kings to Delhi Capitals, and Ajinkya Rahane going from Rajasthan Royals to DC in 2020.
The Gujarat-based team signed Hardik and Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan for INR 15 crore each, with Shubman Gill joining the new franchise as their third pick at INR 7 crore.
Hardik joined MI as an uncapped player for INR 10 lakh in 2015. He was a part of title-winning campaigns in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
Mumbai retained Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard and released Hardik Pandya ahead of the mega auction in 2022.
